In 1890 five Riojan and Basque families founded the Sociedad Vinicola de La Rioja Alta in Haro's Station District.

La Rioja Alta combines the wisdom of tradition and latest wine-making processes. In addition to the century-old winery in Haro, La Rioja Alta has modern facilities located in Labastida, where wine is made from their own grapes, employing the most advanced technology.

The vineyard in production owned by the winery group, La Rioja Alta, in the best terroirs of Rioja, Rioja Alavesa, Ribera del Duero and Ria Baixas already exceeds 690 hectares, thanks to significant investments in land acquisition in recent years. All of this is with the aim of ensuring a production of the highest quality grapes, optimum for long ageing, which can meet the foreseeable world demand for its wines in the coming years.

Oak is at the core of the aging process and La Rioja Alta manufactures their own barrels (which currently number about 30,000) using completely artisanal methods. Wood is imported from the United States and dried it in the open air for two years. Coopers are manually made for every barrel in the owned cooperage located in Haro and over hundred-year-old.

Every six months, the winemaster racks manually every barrel by the light of a candle. It is an art to enhance the development of the wine, removing sediments in a natural way and monitoring each barrel individually.

After the barrels, the wines continue aging in the bottle, where they develop their personality, rounding off and fully enhance all their qualities.
